Patenting @ UK universities from Patstat

Although available statistics show that British universities are patenting more than even before, I have to say that it's particularly hard to measure their patenting activity since misspelling, changes of names, mergers and abbreviations are quite common. The concordance table here controls for different ways the universities  appear as applicants in Patstat.
Data show a sensible growth in the number of patents owned by UK universities after the White Paper of 1993, "Realising our Potential", in which the Department of Trade and Industry called the universities to play a key role in UK innovation and UK competitiveness (Figure 1).
Imperial College (with 307 patent applications between 1980 and 2007), Cambridge (250) and University College London (233) result the top 3 patenting universities (Figure 2).
